Dear User, Here are detailed instructions on how to download and install MediNotes. There are three steps in this process :- 1. Download the program. 2. De-Archive the program 3. Install the program. Downloading the Program :- ========================== There are a total of three versions of MediNotes you can download and install ... The free 'Sampler' version of MediNotes is most of the database, but has key bits of information removed. It is supposed to whet your appetite and encourage you to buy the full version. This sampler version can be downloaded from either the Palmaris website or my own personal website, and will run on any EPOC machine. There are two 'full' versions of MediNotes - one for the Psion Series 5 / 7 / MC218, and one for the Psion Revo(+). The full versions can be downloaded and installed onto your machine, but will only run if you enter the correct 'registration code'. I only email you your registration code once you register on our secure web-server and hand over the money! The full version is available only from the Palmaris website. The links to download the program can be found at http://www.palmaris.com/medinotes.htm Anyway, having chosen which file you want to download, and then having downloaded it, you will probably be asked whether :- 1. You want to run the program immediately. 2. You want to save the file to disc. You should save the file to disc. Remember the location where you saved the file for future reference. De-Archive the program :- ========================= You need to de-archive the files first before you attempt to load them onto your Psion. An archive is a compressed form of a file. To give an example, my full drug database is over 600,000 characters long, but archived the file is only 320,000 characters long. You can identify that a file is 'archived', because it has the '.zip' suffix. Archiving is done to increase the speed whereby files are downloaded from the internet, and therefore minimise phone costs. To de-archive my database, you will need an archiving / de-archiving program. You can download these free from the internet. If you have a PC, I suggest you use 'WinZip' which you can get from www.winzip.com If you are going to download using your Psion, then a suitable Archiving / De-archiving program is 'RMRZip'. (Available from www.rmrsoft.com) Macintosh computers use 'McStuffit' or 'MacZip' (I think). After running your de-archiving program, you will see that the archive contains two files : One file is a 'Helpfile' telling you about the database, and the other file is the database itself. You should extract the database file from the archive, and save it to a known location onto your PC. The instructions to do this will be within the de-archiving program you have chosen to use. If you have downloaded and extracted the sampler version of the database, it will be called 'MediNotesSampler'. If you have downloaded the full version of the database, it will be called 'MediNotes.sis'. Installing the Program :- ========================= The file is now on a directory on your PC. It needs to be transferred *unchanged* onto a directory on your Psion machine. The program most people use to carry out this process is 'PsiWin'. If you have a Macintosh computer, it will be 'PsiMac'. If you have an Acorn computer, it will be 'PsiRisc', 'PsiFS' or 'ArcLink5'. Most programs accomplish this by simply dragging the file icon from the PC directory viewer onto the Psion directory viewer. Don't attempt to convert the file as this won't work. For the 'sampler' version, the Psion should automatically recognise this file as a database file, and this file should now be able to be run by double tapping on it in the normal way. For the 'full' MediNotes application, you should double click on the Medinotes.sis file, and the application will automatically install all the relevant files to the appropriate places on your Psion. If you tap on the application/extras icon, you will now see the distinctive MediNotes rosette on the icon bar. You should run the MediNotes application by tapping on the MediNotes rosette. If you are running it for the first time, you will be asked to enter your user name and registration code. If you don't have your registration code, you won't be able to view the information in the database. Once you enter this code the full database will be displayed. I hope all of this helps. Get back to me if it doesn't. -- Jason Dr Jason Wolfe www.jwolfe.clara.net
